Did you know Abraham Lincoln owned land in Iowa?

For his service in the Black Hawk War, Lincoln received two land grants. Forty acres in Tama County and 120 acres in Crawford County. He never visited either location, however, during a visit to Grenville Dodge in Council Bluffs in 1859, he referred to his land here but did not have the time to see it. This plaque marks the spot of the land and is about seven miles north of Denison and five miles south of Schleswig on Highway 59. In 1923 a marker was built by the Denison Chapter of the D.A.R and can still be seen today.

The land warrant was issued to Lincoln in 1856 and the patent was issued in 1860 during his presidential campaign. After his death, the land was passed to his son Robert, who sold the entire 120 acres to Henry Edwards for $1,300 in 1892.
