Atlantic’s Lighted Christmas Parade: Fireworks, Floats, and Downtown Lights
Atlantic’s Christmas lights are worth a visit on their own. Add fireworks and a parade of glowing floats, and you have another reason to spend a December evening in this western Iowa town.
The Lighted Christmas Parade & Fireworks returns to downtown Atlantic on Saturday, December 5, 2026, beginning at 6 p.m. Fireworks over the historic Rock Island Depot kick off the evening before the lighted floats make their way along Chestnut Street.

A Christmas parade surrounded by lights
The setting is a big part of what makes Atlantic’s parade special. The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce describes the downtown holiday display as more than 200,000 LED lights across six blocks.
In these photos, the illuminated trees frame the street while spectators gather along the sidewalks. The wet pavement adds another layer of color beneath the passing vehicles.
Plan to arrive with time to walk around downtown and enjoy the lights before settling into a viewing spot.

Fireworks start the evening
Be in place before 6 p.m. if you want to catch the opening fireworks. The display takes place over the historic Rock Island Depot and starts the parade festivities.
The Chamber lists the overall event from 6 to 8 p.m. That is the event window, not a guarantee that the parade itself lasts two hours.

Lighted floats and holiday characters
Part of the fun is seeing how each entry approaches the Christmas theme. The photos from a previous parade include a gingerbread-house float, decorated trucks, a waving Grinch, and Santa riding above the crowd.
The combination of large vehicles, handmade decorations, and familiar characters gives you plenty to watch as the entries pass. These photos offer a look at a past event, with this year’s lineup bringing its own displays.

- Pancakes with Santa: 9–11 a.m. at the Nishna Valley Family YMCA. This is listed as a free community event.
- Festival of Trees: 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m. at Randy’s Computer, 501 Chestnut Street.
- Santa’s Cabin: 3–5:30 p.m. at Atlantic City Park.
- YMCA Soup Tent: Soup and beverages available for purchase before or during the parade at 6th and Chestnut.
Leave time for downtown shopping or a meal, too. Check individual business hours when planning your stops.
One detail to note: the 2026 brochure schedules carriage rides for December 3 and 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. It does not list them for parade day.

Tips for watching the parade
Dress for an evening outdoors and give yourself extra time to find parking and walk to Chestnut Street. Warm layers, gloves, and comfortable shoes will make waiting for the parade more enjoyable.
The Chamber has a no-throw policy that also prohibits handing out items, including candy, from floats or walking participants. Let children know ahead of time that this is a parade to watch rather than one where they should expect to collect candy.
For anyone entering a float, lineup begins at 5 p.m. at 6th and Walnut. That is the participant staging location.
