Live Animals and a Flying Angel: Washington, Iowa’s Free Christmas Show Returns in 2026

A camel walking down the center aisle of a church isn’t something you see every day. In Washington, Iowa, it’s part of a Christmas tradition that brings the biblical story of Jesus’ birth to the stage.

Marion Avenue Baptist Church’s Live Animal Christmas Show returns December 6–13, 2026, combining live animals, music, acting, and special effects. Admission is free, and reservations are recommended.

What is the Live Animal Christmas Show?

This indoor theatrical production tells the story of the first Christmas through scenes depicting the Nativity. According to the church, sheep, a donkey, and a camel are part of the production, with an angel flying above the audience adding another memorable moment.

The animals may catch your attention, but the church’s purpose is to share the Christian meaning of Christmas. The complete presentation includes a brief Gospel message at its conclusion.

A Washington Christmas tradition since 1974

The show began in 1974 and has grown over the decades. Today, about 300 church volunteers contribute to the production.

Their work stretches well beyond the stage. Members build sets, prepare costumes, rehearse music and acting, and handle the technical work that brings the scenes together. For visitors, it’s a chance to see a community’s months of preparation come together in one Christmas performance.
