Explore More Than 140 Murals at Sioux City’s Alley Art Festival
Some of downtown Sioux City’s most interesting artwork is found in places that were never intended to become galleries.
The Alley Art Festival has transformed the passages behind downtown buildings into an outdoor collection of more than 140 murals. On Labor Day weekend, the alleys will also fill with art vendors, food trucks, family activities and live music lasting well into the evening.

Date: Saturday, September 5, 2026
Time: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Location: Downtown Sioux City
Festival area: Between Fourth and Sixth streets and Pierce and Nebraska streets
Admission: $5 at the gate
Children: Free admission for ages 12 and younger
Festival entrances will be located along Fourth, Fifth and Sixth streets.
See 27 new murals
The festival’s outdoor gallery already contains more than 140 murals, with 27 new works being added in 2026.
The participating muralists include local and regional artists working in different styles and at varying levels of experience. That variety is part of what makes walking through the alleys interesting. A large, colorful scene may cover most of a wall, while a smaller piece might be tucked around a doorway or placed in a spot you could easily overlook.
The new murals will compete for several awards, including Best of Show and People’s Choice. Visitors can vote for their favorite during the festival.
Although the murals can be viewed throughout the year, the festival brings the area to life with artists, musicians and visitors moving between the different alleys.
Browse the art vendor market
More than 30 artists will have booths at the festival. Everything offered in the vendor market must be original and handmade by the participating artist.
Expect to find paintings, prints, jewelry and other handcrafted items. The market also gives visitors a chance to talk with the artists and learn more about how their work was created.
Listen to live music
MusicMusic will be heard throughout the festival, from buskers performing in the alleys to bands appearing on the main stage.
The 2026 headliner is Black Cat Zydeco, featuring Louisiana accordion player Dwight Carrier. The band is scheduled to perform at 7 p.m.
The lineup also includes the Kris Lager Band and Sexy Cash. Performances continue into the evening, with the festival remaining open until 11 p.m.
Grab something from the food trucks
Food trucks will be stationed around the festival throughout the day. Announced vendors include Diamond Thai, Robles Taqueria, Mama Moon Rayes and La Palapa.
Beer, wine, soda and water will also be available. Bringing some cash is a good idea in case an individual vendor doesn’t accept cards.
Visit the Art Hive Kid’s Zone
Children can make their own artwork inside the Art Hive Kid’s Zone. Free activities are expected to include sidewalk murals and painting a community mural.
Children ages 12 and younger receive free festival admission when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
How much time should you plan for?
Allow at least two or three hours to walk through the alleys, view the murals and browse the vendor market. Add more time if you plan to eat at the festival or stay for the bands.
Anyone primarily interested in photographing the murals may prefer arriving earlier in the day, before the alleys become more crowded. The murals cover walls of different sizes and face several directions, so the available light will change as you move through the festival.
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The event covers several downtown blocks, and most activities take place outdoors.
The murals remain after the festival
The Alley Art Festival lasts one day, but its impact can be seen throughout the year. The murals have turned ordinary brick walls and service alleys into one of Sioux City’s most distinctive public art attractions.
Festival day is a chance to see the newest additions while enjoying live music, meeting artists and exploring a part of downtown that many visitors might otherwise pass by.
