My favorite photos of the Black Hawk Bridge in Lansing, Iowa

Here is a look back at some of my favorite photos of the Black Hawk Bridge in Lansing, Iowa. It was originally built in 1931 and was officially taken down on Dec 19th, 2025 to make way for the new Black Hawk Bridge that is under construction.

Notice how the deck of the Black Hawk Bridge – its corrugated or has opening that allow you to see through down to the river. It’s this style of decking that provides the sound or “singing” of the bridge when vehicles pass over

This photo was taken from downriver about a mile, looking north back towards the bridge and Mt Hosmer on the left.
The Black Hawk Bridge is one of the hardest navigation points on the upper Mississippi due to the sharp turn that is needed once you get to the bridge. The design of the new bridge will help alleviate this problem.
