Adel Sweet Corn Festival: Free Sweet Corn, Dallas County’s Largest Parade & Small-Town Iowa Fun
Each August, downtown Adel fills with the sights, sounds, and smells of one of central Iowa’s favorite summer traditions: the Adel Sweet Corn Festival.
The 2026 festival is scheduled for Friday, August 7 and Saturday, August 8, 2026, with the main festival day taking place Saturday in Adel’s Historic District. Admission is free, and the official 2026 theme is “It Doesn’t Get Any Butter!”
This is the kind of Iowa festival that keeps things simple in the best possible way: a big parade, courthouse square vendors, live music, family activities, and thousands of ears of free sweet corn served by volunteers.

Friday night corn shucking
The festival starts before the crowds arrive.

On Friday, August 7, 2026, volunteers gather for the Shucking of the Corn, which begins at 4:30 p.m. on the south side of the police/fire station on South 10th Street between Main and Prairie. Water and beer are provided while supplies last.
It’s a behind-the-scenes tradition that helps make Saturday’s headline attraction possible: free sweet corn.
Sweet Corn Festival 5K
Saturday morning begins with the Adel Sweet Corn Festival 5K Run/Walk, which takes runners and walkers along Adel’s scenic brick streets.

The 2026 race is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., starting at 215 N. 11th Street in Adel. The race page says the event takes place along the parade route in front of hundreds of spectators, with an awards ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at the start/finish line.
It’s a classic small-town festival morning: run the brick streets, then stick around for the parade, vendors, music, and sweet corn.
Dallas County’s largest parade
One of the biggest draws of the Adel Sweet Corn Festival is the parade.

The Adel Partners Chamber describes it as Dallas County’s largest parade, beginning annually at 9:30 a.m. with floats, entertainment, candy, local businesses, clubs, and more.
For many families, this is the start of the full festival day. Arrive early, find a good spot, and settle in for one of those classic Iowa parade mornings where Main Street feels like the center of everything.
Free sweet corn
This is the main event.

The Adel Partners Chamber says seven tons of sweet corn are purchased for the festival. The corn is shucked Friday evening, stored in a refrigerated truck, then cooked and served by volunteers on Saturday.
That’s what makes this festival feel so perfectly Iowa. You don’t just come to walk around the square. You come for the corn.
And yes, it’s free.
Vendors around the courthouse square
The festival also brings dozens of arts, crafts, food, beverage, and informational booths to the Adel courthouse square. Visitors can shop for handcrafted items, toys, boutique finds, food, cold treats, and more.

The Greater Des Moines Partnership notes that the Sweet Corn Festival welcomes around 10,000 attendees and features approximately 100 vendors, making it one of the area’s big summer festival days.
Kids Zone, car show, bags tournament, and more
The Sweet Corn Festival is built for the whole family.
Most activities take place around the courthouse square, but the Adel Partners Chamber notes that additional fun can be found at the Dallas County Fairgrounds. Festival activities include craft and food vendors, a Kids Zone, a Bags Tournament hosted by St. John’s Catholic Church, a Car Show by Red Line Warriors, and more.

The annual Bags Tournament begins at 11:30 a.m. at the ADM DAC, 215 N. 11th Street.
Free entertainment and street party
The festival keeps going long after the parade and sweet corn.
Free concerts are held throughout the day at the Raccoon Valley Bank Stage and Pavilion just off the Adel square. Then, the festival wraps up with a street party beginning at 6 p.m. and running until midnight. The street party is open to all ages and includes live music and entertainment. Drink tickets are available for those 21 and older, with drinks required to stay inside the designated street party area.
It’s a full day of festival energy, from the early morning 5K to the late-night street party.
Why the Adel Sweet Corn Festival is worth the drive
The Adel Sweet Corn Festival is one of those Iowa events that feels easy to love.
It has the ingredients of a great small-town summer festival: a big parade, brick streets, a courthouse square, local vendors, family activities, live music, and a whole lot of sweet corn.
Come for the free corn. Stay for the parade, the music, the courthouse square energy, and one of those summer festival days that feels unmistakably Iowa.
