6 Iowa Fourth of July Celebrations Worth the Drive

Every summer, small towns across Iowa prove that you don’t need a huge city skyline to have a memorable Fourth of July.

Sometimes the best Independence Day celebrations happen around a town square, beside a lake, in a city park, or along a parade route where everyone seems to know someone.

I recently asked Iowa Road Trip followers to finish this sentence:

“My favorite small-town 4th of July celebration in Iowa is ______ because ______.”

The responses came pouring in. People mentioned fireworks, parades, pancake breakfasts, carnivals, family traditions, food trucks, lake views, and the kind of whole-town atmosphere that makes you want to pull up a lawn chair and stay awhile.

Based on the most-mentioned responses — and the details followers shared — here are six Iowa Fourth of July celebrations worth putting on your summer road trip list.

1. Storm Lake — Star Spangled Spectacular

Storm Lake was one of the most-mentioned Fourth of July destinations from Iowa Road Trip followers, and the reason was clear: the Star Spangled Spectacular.

This two-day celebration is one of northwest Iowa’s big summer traditions, with events spread across July 3 and 4. The official schedule includes concerts, a large parade, patriotic ceremony, Artists’ Alley, street performers, classic car cruise, food vendors, and fireworks.

Followers mentioned many of the same highlights, including the car show, kiddie parade, music, art in the park, and the overall festival atmosphere.

Storm Lake is a good choice if you want more than just a fireworks show. This is the kind of celebration where you can make a full day — or even a full weekend — out of it.

2. New Market — A Small Town That Goes Big

New Market may be a small town, but followers made it clear that its Fourth of July celebration has a big reputation.

The city describes its celebration as one of the premier Fourth of July events in southwest Iowa, with a parade and fireworks as two of the anchor events. The Celebrate New Market page also calls the Fourth of July the highlight of the year.

Iowa Road Trip followers backed that up with comments about the big parade, games, events, entertainment, food trucks, volleyball, dodgeball tournament, pedal tractor pull, and fireworks. One follower described it as the moment when “the small town becomes BIG at 4th of July.”

That’s exactly the kind of small-town Iowa energy this list is about.

3. Manilla — Hometown Feel, Free Fun, and Fireworks

Manilla showed up again and again in the comments, and the descriptions had a strong hometown feel.

Followers mentioned the parade, free activities, food, music, fireworks, and the way the celebration brings families and former residents back together. One follower said Manilla has “the best firework show,” while another talked about people driving from miles around to see it.

Several comments also mentioned Schram Park as part of the experience, along with food, shade trees, photo opportunities, and the kind of “love my small town” energy that makes these celebrations special.

The official city site also leans into that community pride, calling Manilla “The Town People Pulled For” and highlighting its Fourth of July imagery, Charlie Schram Park, and local heritage.

4. Spillville — Fireworks Synchronized to Music

Spillville may have had the clearest “fireworks-first” reputation in the comments.

Multiple followers praised the Spillville fireworks, with several specifically mentioning that the show is synchronized to music. Others mentioned food options, vendors, kids activities, and the long-running northeast Iowa tradition.

The event information available for 2026 points to Riverside Park, with the celebration centered around July 4. Regional event information also describes Spillville’s celebration as including bingo, baseball, live music, a DJ, kids games, food vendors, and a fireworks display.

For travelers in northeast Iowa, this sounds like one of those celebrations where the fireworks are the main event — but there is plenty to do before the sky lights up.

5. Clear Lake — Fireworks Over the Water

There’s something hard to beat about fireworks reflecting over a lake, and that’s why Clear Lake deserves a spot on this list.

The official 2026 Clear Lake Fourth of July Celebration runs July 1–6 and includes carnival rides, bingo, a lakeside vendor market, live music, a parade, a Freedom 5K, kids fun run, and the Flashing Thunder Fireworks show over Clear Lake.

Followers specifically called out the fireworks over the lake, which is the visual hook that makes this celebration stand out.

Clear Lake may be bigger and busier than some of the tiny towns on this list, but it still has that classic Iowa summer feel: downtown activity, a lakefront setting, carnival food, music, and fireworks over the water.

Belmond tied with Clear Lake in the follower responses, and the comments were especially focused on the fireworks.

Several followers simply nominated Belmond, while others specifically praised the fireworks show. One commenter called out 4 G’s Pyrotechnics by name, saying they put on an amazing show.

The Belmond Fourth of July Facebook page appears to be the best place to watch for current 2026 updates. The visible event information points to a 2026 show on Friday, July 3, along with activities such as a car, bike and tractor show, street dance, 5K fun run, and karaoke.

Older city event information also shows that Belmond has offered a full day of activities in past celebrations, including a parade, pork chop dinner, inflatables, bingo, cake walk, and more.

That’s the fun part about asking Iowans where to go for the Fourth of July. Every town has its own traditions, and every person has a reason why their town’s celebration is the one worth seeing.
