Although the building is commonly described as the first Hy-Vee store, customers would not have seen the Hy-Vee name on the storefront in 1930.

The original business was known as the Beaconsfield Supply Store.

Hyde, Vredenburg and their business partners incorporated as Hyde & Vredenburg, Inc. in 1938. The company adopted the Hy-Vee name in 1952, combining the “Hy” from Hyde with the “Vee” from Vredenburg.

The brick building predates the Hyde and Vredenburg partnership.

Despite those problems, historic features remained inside, including an embossed tin ceiling above a later ceiling installation.

Local leaders and preservation supporters have continued exploring grants, funding and possible restoration work. Hy-Vee has also expressed interest in the building’s future as the company approaches its 100th anniversary.
