A Parish Rooted in Pioneer Faith
St. Bernard parish was officially established in 1879, as Catholic settlers in the Breda area sought a spiritual home closer than long journeys to other towns. Over the years, the parish grew into a vibrant faith community centered on the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church.

The Church Building — Then and Now
Construction on the church that still stands today began in 1888, with the cornerstone laid on June 17 of that year. Built at a cost of about $15,000 — a significant sum for the times — the original church was expanded in 1915 to its present size at an additional cost of around $13,000.
This impressive structure is known for:
- Its soaring steeple, which dominates the Breda skyline and can be seen for miles around.
- Large stained-glass windows, illuminating the interior with rich color and reverence.
- Cathedral-style arches and detailed sanctuary design, offering parishioners a serene space for worship and reflection.
In 1999, the church underwent a careful restoration to preserve its historic character. The exterior was insulated and covered with stucco, while stained glass and window frames were refurbished and protected. Interior updates were thoughtfully completed to retain original artistry and craftsmanship.

More Than a Church — A Community Anchor
St. Bernard’s influence extends beyond Sunday Mass. The parish historically managed its own school and continues to be a center for community gatherings, faith formation, and spiritual support. The parish also maintains St. Bernard Cemetery on the east edge of Breda, serving generations of local families.

Worship and Life at St. Bernard Today
As part of the Good Shepherd Catholic Parish cluster, St. Bernard continues to offer regular Mass and spiritual services — with weekend Mass and weekday worship opportunities for locals and visitors alike. Details and schedules are available through the parish’s calendar.
Whether you’re drawn by history, architecture, or faith, St. Bernard Church in Breda is a must-visit stop on any Iowa road trip — a testament to the enduring legacy of faith communities across the rural Midwest.
