A Faith Community Born from Pioneer Spirit
The parish was established by Catholic settlers in 1868–1869, when Bishop Hennessey encouraged Lambert Kniest, Henry Baumhover, and others to form a faith community on the Iowa prairie. They named the settlement and parish Mount Carmel because the land was discovered on the feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
The first church building was completed in 1869 — a modest 24-by-40-foot frame structure built on a stone foundation. At the time, it served as the only Catholic church between Boone and Council Bluffs, a testament to the dedication of the early parishioners. Father Henry J. Heimbucher was the parish’s first pastor.

Buildings Through the Ages — Perseverance Through Adversity
Over the years, the church buildings have seen trials and rebirth:
- The second church, built in 1881 of brick, was destroyed by fire in 1883, possibly started by incense during a service.
- A third building lasted until 1892, when its steeple was struck by lightning.
- After another fire in 1906, the current structure was completed in 1907 and still stands today, serving the parish community more than a century later.
This continuity of faith demonstrates the resilience and commitment of Mount Carmel’s Catholic community through generations.

More Than a Church — Education and Service
From early on, education was a priority for the parish. In 1874, the original church was expanded to include the first parish school, staffed by six lay teachers.
Just six years later, in 1880, the Franciscan Sisters of La Crosse, Wisconsin began serving at the school — a remarkable commitment that continued without interruption for 106 years, ending in 1986.
A new school building was erected in 1912, and for decades the parish supported Catholic education through both elementary and high school programs. The high school’s last graduating class was in 1958, and school operations later merged with nearby Breda to form Christ the King School.

A Parish with Deep Roots and Bright Future
Over its long history, Our Lady of Mount Carmel has fostered vocations to religious life and the priesthood from within its own community.
In 2021, the parish celebrated its sesquicentennial, marking 150 years of faith, community, and service in rural Iowa.
Today, Our Lady of Mount Carmel continues as part of the Good Shepherd Catholic Parish cluster, offering regular worship, sacraments, and community ministries to the faithful of Carroll County.
