What Is Civil War Days?

Civil War Days is a living history event that brings together reenactors, historians, and volunteers to recreate what life was like during the Civil War. Participants portray soldiers, civilians, and tradespeople, offering visitors a chance to see — and sometimes participate in — history firsthand.

Rather than focusing on one single battle, the event showcases many aspects of 19th-century life, from military drills to social gatherings, faith, food, and family traditions.

Weekend Highlights

Friday: Opening the Camps

The weekend often begins with a community welcome and the arrival of reenactors. Visitors can explore the camps, talk with participants in period dress, and learn how soldiers and civilians lived during the 1860s.

On Friday night, they typically offer a “Flashlight tour” of the Lenox College Buildings”.  Bring your own light source and they lead you through the buildings in the dark of night.

Saturday: Battles, Parades, and Period Fun

Saturday is the heart of Civil War Days and features the most action-packed schedule:

  • A parade through Hopkinton, showcasing reenactors and community groups
  • Demonstrations of period crafts, cooking, and daily life
  • Food stands, ice cream, and classic festival treats
  • Family-friendly activities like pie-eating contests and kids’ games
  • The highlight is the Civil War battle reenactment, complete with infantry movements and cannon fire.  Typically, it’s around 50 to 60 actors in the battle and last about 30 to 40 minutes..  A few points to keep in mind:
    • It’s loud.  Very loud.  In fact, I think it’s actually scary for younger kids.  Middle school kids and above will love it, but your young ones need to step back.
    • It’s also very smoky, which is really interesting because its just a 50 to 60 actors.  Keep in mind how loud and smoky it is and then multiply that times 100,000 men in a real Civil War battle, it will give you an idea of how scary a really battle was.
    • Don’t leave right away after the battle – follow the actors back to their camp, as this is a great time for kids to interact with them and to ask questions.

Sunday: Reflection and Remembrance

Sunday offers a quieter, more reflective close to the weekend. Many years include:

  • A period-style church service
  • Additional reenactments or demonstrations
  • Time to revisit favorite areas and ask reenactors questions

It’s a meaningful way to wrap up the experience before camps are packed up and the town returns to normal.

Why Civil War Days Matters

Civil War Days isn’t just about costumes and reenactments — it’s about preserving local history and sharing stories that shaped the nation. The event helps support the Delaware County Historical Society & Museum, which works year-round to protect and interpret the region’s past.

Hosting the event on the former Lenox College campus, where a large number of professors and students enlisted in the Civil War, adds depth and authenticity to the experience.
