The POET Tree in Hanlontown, Iowa: A Spectacular Christmas Lights Stop
One tree. Thousands of white lights. Just west of Hanlontown, Iowa, the POET Tree turns a lone tree in an open field into a memorable Christmas lights stop. Its illuminated branches stretch across the night sky, creating a display that’s even more impressive in person.
The tree gets its name from the nearby POET Bioprocessing plant, whose employees decorate and maintain the holiday display. Thousands of white lights trace the trunk and branches, reaching out toward the tips of the tree. Their work has turned this spot just west of Hanlontown into a favorite holiday photo stop.

You’ll find the POET Tree just west of Hanlontown, Iowa, near the intersection of Highway 9 and Fir Avenue. It stands in an open field south of the POET Bioprocessing plant. Use the Google Maps link below to help plan your route.
Before visiting, check for current information about the holiday lighting schedule. Dates for the 2026 season have not yet been confirmed.

Is it as beautiful as the photos? I think it’s even better in person. A single tree in an open field, outlined in white lights from its trunk to its outer branches. The simplicity is what makes it so striking, and I can’t give the POET employees enough credit for the work they put into it.
If you enjoy photographing Christmas lights, try arriving shortly before sunset. You’ll have a chance to capture the tree against the fading evening sky before seeing it glow after dark.
